Garmin developing an android phone Posted on:25-12-2008

Garmin is is in development stages of an Android based mobile phone soon to be released in 2009, despite its failure to launch the Nuviphone project.
Garmin is best known for its range of satellite navigation systems (GPS) , but the parallels with mobile phones are easy to be seen.
Google's G1 Android phone is making use of Google Maps and Streetview, which makes it seem only a matter of time before android mobile phones can be installed into vehicles to act as fully fledged satellite navigation devices.
however, Garmin is constantly monitoring the mobile phone market and although its Nuviphone has yet to emerge, perhaps a change to the Android engine will smooth things up.
"Garmin also plans to launch self-developed Android handsets in the second half of 2009, with production to be outsourced" says Garmines CEO.
This move is not unexpected, coming two weeks after Garmin joined the open handset alliance (OHA) that is powered by Google and is ehind Android, but competition in the mobile phone – and even the Android mobile phone – market is starting to be fierce.
Samsung is another one of the major players who joined OHA and is scheduled to release an Android phone in early 2009, in what should definitely be a fascinating year for the mobile market.
